Here's how it works: 

Male & Female Flowers Cucumber plants usually have both male and female flowers. Male flowers appear first and produce pollen. Female flowers come later and have a tiny cucumber at the base. 

Pollination is Key: 

For cucumbers to grow, pollen from the male flower must reach the female flower; usually with the help of bees or other pollinators. Once pollinated, the base of the female flower begins to swell and grow into a cucumber. 

Why so many flowers? 

Sometimes, the plant produces extra male flowers to attract pollinators. Not every flower will become fruit, but each one increases the chances.
